5 ways to meet people in a new city

Date:

1. Speak to everyone: Expand your notion of who your friends should be. An elderly person could have some amazing stories or suggestions of unique places. The much-younger passer-by could tell you about the simple places to have fun at.

2. Get over your fear of rejection: Make an effort to talk to pretty much anyone about anything. Even chatting with a stranger for a few minutes can be fulfilling. It may seem daunting to sit at a restaurant bar by yourself, but you’d be surprised at how easy it can be to strike up a conversation, whether it’s with the bartender or the person next to you.

3. Social networking: Look into local social networks that specifically target folks who are trying to make new friends. Such organizations host group activities, from cocktail mixers to a day of volunteering.

4. Live with a Local: If you’re looking to make friends, and you’re sometimes a bit shy, then living alone probably isn’t a good idea. You could live with fellow travellers, ex-pats or foreign students, who are easier to find, but if you really want to meet local people then the best way is to live with some.

5. Let people know you’re new: Tell the people you meet that you are new in town. Make a point of asking for the best places to eat, shop, or see the sights of the city. When people hear you are new to the area they will usually go out of their way to help you find places to go, which in turn gives you more opportunity to meet potential friends.
