80% of Assam hit by flood, 18 lakh affected in over 1800 villages

Guwahati: Nearly 80 per cent of Assam has been engulfed by floods which has affected 20 out of the total 27 districts, claimed 42 lives and affected 18 lakh people, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Monday.

Loss of six lives was reported during the day in the flood, which has affected 18 lakh people in almost 1,880 villages and submerged over 1.1 lakh hectares of crop land.

ASDMA said one person was killed at Sipajhar in Darrang district, one at Barkhetri in Nalbari district, two persons at Mayong and Laharighat in Morigaon district and another two at Lakhipur in Goalpara.

With this, the current wave of flood has claimed lives of 42 persons so far taking the total toll in this year’s two waves to 47 in Assam.

ASDMA said nearly 18 lakh persons are affected across Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Morigaon, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Dhubri, Kamrup Metropolitan and Goalpara districts.

The worst hit is Dhubri district where nearly 4.5 lakh people have been affected due to floods, followed by Morigaon with more than 2.6 lakh people, the ASDMA said.
Authorities are running 308 relief camps in Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Cachar, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Sonitpur, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Kamrup, Goalpara and Dhubri sheltering nearly 1.4 lakh people, it said.

Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger level in Jorhat, Goalpara and Dhubri districts. Burhidehing river is flowing above danger level at Khowang in Dibrugarh, Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur, Kopili at Kampur in Nagaon and Kushiyara river is flowing above the red mark at Karimganj town, the ASDMA said.
