Gurgaon top cops spar, Car Free day hit

Date:

The cars were parked and the bicycles were to set to take the centre stage on #CarFreeTuesday, but the initiative was sidelined by internal bickering between two top Gurgaon cops.

The Car Free Day initiative in the Millennium City on Tuesday was hindered when Bharti Arora, Joint CP, Gurgaon, Bharti Arora accused Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk of harassing and mental torturing her over a rape case enquiry.

“I demand a CBI inquiry into this,” Arora said after complaining to DGP Haryana about Virk.

A rape case was registered against Ajay Bhardwaj in July 2014 and the rape victim had asked the police to arrest his whole family. The court had dismissed her demands saying that his family has no role to play in this.

The case was then given to Arora for supervision, who claimed that this is a fake case as it doesn’t even come under the definition of rape because the victim has been staying with Bhardwaj for 7 years and have two children with him.

Bharti said she was threatened and asked to leave the case. She added that Virk even tried to malign her reputation and demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter.

However, reacting to this, Virk said: “False allegations, I have written to DGP, requesting him to take action.”

The present blame game has clouded the entire initiative which was a crowning glory for Gurgaon police.

Public transport in the city was streamlined by traffic police to ensure the second #CarFreeTuesday is a success. Cops also asked auto unions, Rapid Metro and shuttle buses to co-operate with authorities so that residents do not face problems while using public transport.

On September 22, Gurgaon put the brakes on cars, and accelerated into the future with the first installment of the Car Free Day that the city would observe every Tuesday. This was a novel idea of the city police and a clutch of MNCs to get the city’s car-loving people to ditch their private vehicles and take to public transport.
