#ChennaiFloods: PM Modi announces Rs1000 cr aid

The city of Chennai was able to breathe a little sigh of relief on Thursday morning, as rains have abated in the city, but most areas remain waterlogged, and normal life has been brought to a grinding halt.

Here are the latest developments:
• Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa surveys flooded Chennai as thousands are stranded in the city.
• The death toll has risen to 269.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has has announced a Rs 1000 cr relief fund for flood afflicted Chennai. He also met the TN CM, J Jayalalithaa.

• IAF airlifts 200 stranded people from Chennai, who are being brought to the Air base in Begumpet (Telangana).
• NDRF has rescued about 2400 people so far and deployed more than 100 boats there.
• President Pranab Mukherjee tweeted today saying, saddened by loss of human lives & serious damage to infrastructure in Chennai due to heavy rains. My prayers and good wishes are with the people of Tamil Nadu during this difficult time. Confident the people of Tamil Nadu will overcome this tragedy with fortitude and dignity.
• Heavy rains and water overflowing above the danger level at Railway Bridges in Chennai-Gudur section has impacted the functioning of trains, following which the South Central Railway (SCR) has cancelled 12 trains and assured full refunds of fare for the same.
• Chennai Airport will remain closed till December 6. From today, Chennai bound flights will be landing at INS Rajali Airbase of Indian Navy at Arakonam which is about 60 kilometers from Chennai.
• Home Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his concern over #Chennaifloods in Parliament. “This rainfall has broken the record of past 100 years and about 40% of the mobile and telephone connections are not working due to floods. PM Modi will do an aerial survey today and appropriate steps will be taken after that,” Home Minister said.
• Water levels still rising. Residents say no water available for drinking.
• The Union Home Ministry held a crisis to review the flood situation.
• Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Thursday assured that the Central Government is committed to provide help and assistance to the people of flood-hit Tamil Nadu.
