Role of armed forces getting wider now: Goa Governor

Date:

The responsibilities of armed forces are increasing each passing day as the jawans not only guard borders but also assist in tackling internal disturbances and fighting terrorism, Governor Mridula Sinha said today.

“A jawan of the armed forces works for the nation and even after his retirement he is committed to work for the society and takes up social causes in locality where he resides.

People therefore need to stand up for the armed forces,” Sinha is quoted as saying in a press release here.

The Governor was addressing a reception at Raj Bhavan on the Armed Forces Flag Day.

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said the personnel of armed forces are trained and well-disciplined, and “an ex-servicemen joining a government job is therefore considered as an asset”.

On the occasion, those government departments who made the highest collection last year in Armed Forces Flag Day fund were awarded trophies.

The Directorate of Education bagged the first prize, followed by the Women and Child Development and Excise Department who won second and third prizes, respectively.

The police department won a special prize for best efforts.

Sinha disbursed cash incentives to Goans, as launched by government, who have joined the armed forces in the officer and soldier categories.
