Many Gurgaon schools shut for two days because of smog

Date:

 On Wednesday, air quality dropped down to dangerous levels in Delhi-NCR. While multiple monitoring agencies recorded the highly polluting and dangerous PM2.5 and PM10 at over 10 times the safe limit across the city-state during the day.

According to the report, Scientists warned of severe health problems for children forced to attend school in a city enveloped by a thick layer of toxic smog. Almost 16 million people are gasping for breath. Since Diwali, the air pollution got worse.

In such a scenario, schools in Gurgaon have put restrictions on outdoor activities and many schools have declared holiday for two more days. While in Noida, authorities have asked students to wear masks while commuting or when on the playground.

Also, the health experts say these tiny particles can pass through the body’s natural sieve, go deep into the airways and lungs and even enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation, heart disease, chronic lung disease and cancers, among others.

However, from Friday, the air quality was likely to improve as per as the state-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

According to few schools in Delhi-NCR, they said that children’s health is a priority but under the Right to Education (RTE) Act they have to have at least 220 working days per year. If they give holidays then studies will get affected. But definitely something needs to be done.

Krishan Chugh, director of pediatrics at the Gurgaon-based Fortis Memorial Research Institute was quoted saying that;

 “Pollution levels are toxic and my advice to parents is to keep younger children (ages 6 and below) home.”
