Ahmedabad: Five members of a family, including a woman and two children, were killed allegedly after their car rammed into a truck from behind near Deesa town of Banaskantha district, police said on Monday.

The mishap occurred last night at Akhol cross-road on Bhildi Highway near Deesa when the car, with seven occupants, rammed into the rear side of the truck, said an official from Deesa Taluka police station.

Five people, including a four-month-old toddler, died on the spot while two were injured in the mishap, he said.

The deceased have been identified as Yasin Memon (30), Rizwana Memon (27), Iqbal Memon (26), Rehana Memon (7) and Ayaan Memon (4-month), all residents of Palanpur, Banaskantha, according to police inspector D D Gohil.

“Our investigations have revealed that both the vehicles were headed to Deesa from Bhildi. However, the truck driver suddenly stopped his vehicle near the cross-roads and started reversing it, which was not noticed by the car driver,” said Gohil.

“As a result, the car rammed into the truck, killing five of the family on the spot and injuring two, who have been admitted to a nearby hospital,” he added.

Deesa police have lodged a case of rash driving against the unidentified truck driver, who fled from the spot after abandoning the vehicle, Gohil said.
