The Tajewala Barrage built across Yamuna River, was completed in 1873 by the Britishers and it regulated the flow of the Yamuna for irrigation in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana through two canals originating at this place namely Western Yamuna Canal and Eastern Yamuna Canal, as well as the municipal water supply to Delhi. The barrage has been decommissioned but still retain its historic beauty.
The barrage has been decommissioned but still retain its beauty. The Yamuna passes through the barrage and its flow is very smooth as the full might of Yamuna has been diverted by the dams at the nearby Hathnikund Barrage. The surrounding area consists of the dried up Yamuna basin.
There was an old trolley car which is no longer functional, to cross the Yamuna, replaced by a sidewalk now. A straight road leads from there to the Hathnikund Barrage, parallel to the man-made canals, perfect for a morning or evening walk.
There is an old Government Rest House just next to the barrage, built during the pre-independence era, which is surrounded by magnificent gardens and is still inhabited occasionally by the officers of the Irrigation Department of Haryana. If you wish to stay at the Rest House, make sure you book it in advance, as it is mostly occupied. You can find good hotels in the Hathnikund area which is only 5km away.
