As part of its annual ‘performance appraisal’, IT giant Wipro is learnt to have fired hundreds of its employees. At least 600 employees of the company have been “let go” according to sources. The number is expected to go up to 2000.
There were at least 1.79 lakh Wipro employees at the end of December last year. The Bengaluru-based company said, “We undertake a rigorous performance appraisal process on a regular basis to align our workforce with business objectives, strategic priorities of the company, and client requirements.”
The company further clarified, “The performance appraisal may also lead to the separation of some employees from the company and these numbers vary from year to year.” Wipro, however, didn’t confirm the exact number of employees that have been asked to leave.
The company, however, did not comment on the number of employees that have been asked to leave.
This development is important given that the Indian IT companies are facing an uncertain environment after Donald Trump signed an executive order on revised visa norms.
