Croatia: the pearl of the Adriatic

Date:

If your Mediterranean fantasies feature balmy days by sapphire waters in the shade of walled towns, then Croatia is the place to turn them into reality-Lonely Planet

Top six experiences to have in Croatia;

Linden Tree Retreat and Ranch

If you’re an adventure lover like me, this is the place to be! From horseback riding to trekking, this ranch has the works. I went for the two hour trail ride on horseback through the serene hills and enchanting woods with guide Daniella. It was the best two hours of my life to say the least. From an extremely friendly and helpful staff to the amazing chef who made us an incredible goat cheese sandwich, the ranch was the highlight of our trip.

It also has incredibly classy and posh lodging, which is a bit steep but nonetheless worth it! Overall, I would recommend that if your trip to Croatia would be incomplete without visiting this ranch!

Adress; Velika Plana 5, 53213, Velika Plana, Croatia.

Hvar Island

Ahh, Hvar! The quote I mentioned above aptly describes Hvar. Balmy days, sapphire waters, and walled towns- it has ’em all. I would recommend a minimum of one night stay at Hvar, as there is so much to explore and especially its night life. The town to visit is Hvar Town, with tiny breakfast cafes serving delicious eggs and beaches scattered all along the coast line. But be careful, almost all beaches in Croatia are pebble and not sand, so buy these amazing beach shoes that are sold widely for only 10 Kuna.

Overall, Hvar is the most laid back and relaxing place in Croatia, to just chill out in the sun and walk around. Do wander around the town and try to get lost in the exhilarating alleys. Trust me, its the best way to explore a town like Hvar town.

Walls of Dubrovnik

If you’re not flying into Dubrovnik and are travelling from another city- DRIVE TO DUBROVNIK! The views along the way are amazing and the highlight is the tiny olive oil shops along the rural roads, selling authentic and familial olive oil. So many people are skeptical about crossing Bosnia to get to Dubrovnik (for those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about- there is a nine kilometre stretch of Bosnia that you have to cross to get to Dubrovnik from the north). There is no problem at all, you don’t need a Bosnian visa for this, but make sure you have a multiple entry Croatian visa.

Now getting to the Walls of Dubrovnik. As soon as you enter the Old City of Dubrovnik you’ll see a long stone staircase. Thats the way to the Walls. ‘The walls’ are a fortification that inclose the entire Old City. In one sentence: the views are breathtaking from up there.  They take 120 Kuna per person, and I know its a little expensive but its totally worth it! It was the most phenomenal walk I have ever taken, with the sound of the waves of the Adriatic crashing against the mighty rocks and the brick red houses of the city dotting the background. Also if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, this is the place for you to be!

Driving

Croatia is a place to drive. The views are amazing, the roads are hilly and adventurous. Rent a car, and just set course. If you have a trailer, its all the more better. There are numerous trailer parks and camps all over.

Shopping In Split

It was my mothers favourite place for obvious reasons. SHOPPING! Diocletians Palace has numerous shops, from small street shops to big brands. You’ll find an ice cream parlour every 500 meters selling extraordinary flavours and the pizza is just to die for. Go to the Palace (which isn’t actually a palace but more like a small city), to relax and shop and eat delicious food.

Cevapi

The most delicious street food I’ve ever eaten. It is the most famous and special street food of Croatia. Mouth watering sausages, that melt in your mouth wrapped by the softest bread and spiced by the delicious sauce. Its one of the best things I’ve ever eaten!

The best place to eat this is Katun Paulina in Split.

So this is what I loved about Croatia, but there is so much more! It’s one of the most amazing countries I’ve ever been to, with a culture that is so amazing and exhilarating. And don’t forget; “always take the scenic route.”
