Special assembly session in Kerala for cattle slaughter notification

Date:

A special session will be held in the Kerala Assembly on Thursday, to discuss the Central Government’s notification of the sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter. Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, said that the state government will challenge the centre’s notification. Vijayan made this decision after writing to his counterparts to support this ‘anti federal’ stance.

There has been a lot of opposition to the centre’s decision, with many states holding beef ‘fests’ and openly denying to accept the notification. IIT-Madras held a beef fest too in opposition to the central government’s decision. In addition, the Karnataka and Tripura governments have also opposed this notification.

There are also rules preventing the cattle being used for slaughter purposes; with Union Minister Harsh Vardhan ordering that the ministry notify the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017 to ensure that the sale of cattle is not meant for slaughter purposes. He said the seller and buyer both have to ensure that the cattle is not being bought or sold across the country’s livestock markets for slaughter purposes
