A lot of selfie deaths have been reported in the last two years in India. According to a study in 2015, an estimated 24 billion selfies were uploaded on Google by people in the age bracket of 18 to 33 alone!
Selfie deaths in India were reported mostly when people tried clicking themselves from a great height and accidentally fell down. Some time back, Mumbai Police took a step and declared certain areas as ‘no selfie zones’ to discourage people from taking selfies at these precarious places.
A few days ago, Moradabad Police decided to take stern action on people who were found taking selfies at places that can be life threatening. Moradabad’s Superintendent of Police, Ashish Srivastava declared people who were found taking or uploading selfies clicked at places like highways, railway tracks, railway stations, bus stations, or tall buildings will be penalized.
Here is a list compiled by Newsmobile team of some of the bizzare ‘selfie-related’ deaths that took place in India last year:
1. In January, 2016, three students aged 20 to 22 died trying to take a selfie close to a speeding train. They were travelling to Agra to see the Taj Mahal on Republic Day and had stopped their car on a railway track to attempt the ‘daredevil’ selfie stunt.
2. In Nagpur, seven youth drowned in a lake in March this year, while attempting to take a selfie. Their boat had tipped over as they stood up to pose.
3. In Tamil Nadu, an engineering student died taking selfies with friends at Kolli Hills. The rock on which he was standing cracked and gave way, plunging him 60 feet to death from head injuries.
I am sure many of you have already read about these stupid acts of daredevilry already and wondered, what were these people thinking? However, peer pressure and the need to strike a unique pose for the world to wonder at has been known to make even the most sensible succumb. What is life in front of ’15 minutes of fame’ after all?
Life is indeed much more precious than a false sense of ego satisfied by the number of likes on a bizarre Display Picture (DP). So, here are some don’ts you should remember while taking a selfie:
Assess the Area: You should look around the place want to take a selfie in. Be aware of the layout of the area. The consequences of not taking precautions beforehand can lead to severe losses. Check if the place is safe for you to click a selfie there.
Don’t Destroy Nature: Taking selfie is a happy thing, but, destroying the natural surroundings is a huge cost to the already depleted mother earth. Observe and then decide how you can take a picture without harming nature. If that is not going to be possible, then find another spot.
Don’t Drive and Click: Selfie sticks were not designed for drivers. Period. You should not take selfies sitting at the driver’s seat because such a stunt can lead to a painful end.
Don’t Ignore Safety Rules: If there are some safety rules written outside a building, a zoo, any monument or mountain edge then don’t ignore them. Read them carefully as they are there to create a safe place for you.
Finally, be cautious. Don’t get so excited at the prospect of taking a selfie that you miss sudden dangers like a charging bull or a rising tide. Be safe. Be happy.
