Former Cabinet Secretary Naresh Chandra passes away at 82

New Delhi: Former Cabinet Secretary Naresh Chandra passed away at the age of 82 in Goa on Sunday night.

He passed away at around 10 pm, due to multiple organ failure, in Goa’s Manipal Hospitals, a hospital official said.

His office confirmed that Chandra was admitted to the hospital on Friday.

Chandra had served as the Cabinet Secretary from 1990-92 and was the Indian Ambassador to the US from 1996 to 2001.

He was one of India’s most well respected bureaucrats, he was the doyen of government affairs. Chandra was affable and had a great sense of humour. He served in some key positions including India’s Envoy to the US, Cabinet Secretary and advisor to the PM. He served on several key government committees.

He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.
