Huge leap for India in Athletics

India has topped the 22nd Asian Athletic Championship (29) medals tally defeating China by 9 medals. India has leapt far ahead in this competition from the previous year of Qatar Indoor Asian Athletics Championship (2016) where India managed to secure only 7 medals and was at the bottom of the table.

This year’s athletic championship has proved to be historic for India with such high number of medals which was never achieved before. India also won the most number of gold medals in the Championship (12). The gold medal rush started after Swapna Barman won the first gold for the country in heptathlete by collecting a total of 5942 points from the seven events.

Spectators in the Kalinga Stadium of Bhubaneswar were on the edge of their seats by seeing a stellar performance by Indian athletes to break the China’s dominance that was there in the previous Asia Athletics Championships.
