With reports of the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) recommending a central legalization to allow online and regulated betting in Cricket doing rounds, Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel clarified today that he has not yet come across any such proposal.
“No such proposal has been made to me. I am against betting. I am one of those who banned gambling. But, the final decision rests with the Government of India,” Goel said.
Earlier, the AIGF reportedly sought central legalization to allow online betting and regulated betting in Cricket.
The AIGF, in its white paper submitted to the Law Commission of India (LCI), stated the Center could earn thousands of crores in tax and revenues every year if it legalizes betting.
Betting on sports is banned in India, but is reportedly carried out illegally.
