US President’s Donald Trump’s ex-wife Ivana sparked a controversy on Tuesday when she jokingly referred herself as the ”first lady” which elicited a sharp response from current First Lady Melania Trump’s office.

During an interview with a morning talk Ivana, mother to Donald Trump’s three eldest children, said that her status as the President’s first wife effectively made her first lady.

“I’m basically first Trump wife. I’m first lady, okay?” she quipped.

“I have the direct number to the White House but I don’t really want to call him (Trump) there because Melania is there, and I don’t want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that,” she said.

Ivana’s provocative remarks were dismissed by the White House as a publicity stunt to generate buzz about her new book.

“There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex, this is unfortunately only attention-seeking and self-serving noise,” said the statement issued by Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s spokeswoman.

The statement also slammed Ivana’s view that living in Washington DC must be “terrible” for Melania and had she been in the latter’s shoes, she would have hated it.

“Mrs Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and The President. She loves living in Washington, DC and is honoured by her role as First Lady of the United States. She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books,” it stated.
