After Paytm, Samsung to open its online mall

Date:

Samsung is all set to launch a new smartphone in India on January 17. The phone, Galaxy On 7 prime isn’t technically a new phone but what is more interesting with the launch of the phone is that it will apparently “transform your shopping experience.”

Courtesy of the phone, Samsung is trying to launch a new service or app, as it may be called. On 7 prime will be tagged along service/app called Samsung Mall and will hopefully start rolling out from January 17, exclusively on Amazon.

The Galaxy On7 Prime isn’t technically a new phone but a rehashed version of phones like the Galaxy On Nxt (that has been around since 2016) and the Galaxy J7 Prime. Even in its current avatar, we’ve already been fine tuned with all its hardware specs since Amazon India has been teasing the phone for quite some time now. Only its price and availability details have been kept under the wraps. Not many would have, however, guessed that Samsung would hold a press conference — slated for January 17 — simply for showing off a phone that has already launched online.

It seems that the Galaxy On7 Prime was (is) just a drop in the ocean. The real star attraction is set to be Samsung Mall, an app or service that seems to be specifically designed for the Indian market and its various online shopping platforms.

Although the Amazon India product page leaves nothing to the imagination, with regards to Samsung Mall, we’re yet to see it in action so that’s something to look forward to. Also we do not know for sure yet whether AI has got anything to do with it since Samsung’s Bixby isn’t supposed to be on-board the Galaxy On7 Prime.

All we know for now is that Samsung’s upcoming app or service will work across online shopping platforms — meaning you’ll be able to use it across Amazon, Flipkart and others — and will have visual search as one of its key features.

Amazon India is, in fact, touting three features of Samsung’s Mall:

  • Visual search that would allow you to click photos of a product (or use a generic image already stored in your phone’s gallery) and then search for the same online
  • A single interface that would allow you to search and shop across multiple online shopping sites
  • Universal cart that would allow you to add products from multiple online shopping sites and review them in a single cart

Samsung isn’t new to introducing India-specific apps and features. The company previously launched a stripped down version of Samsung Pay, aka Samsung Pay Mini that works seamlessly on mid-tier and budget handsets. The Galaxy On7 Prime, for the record, will also support Samsung Pay Mini out-of-the-box.

The Galaxy On7 Prime maybe a start, but its services like Samsung Mall that would also differentiate a Samsung phone from a Xiaomi phone and hopefully give Samsung the edge that it’s looking for.
