EC announces election schedule in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland

New Delhi: Election Commission on Thursday announced dates for Assembly elections in three Northeastern states- Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland.

Polling in Tripura will take place on February 18 while Meghalaya and Nagaland to vote on February 27.

The counting of votes for all three states will take place on March 3rd.

  • The Meghalaya Assembly is currently led by the Congress, which won 29 seats in the previous election.

  • Tripura, on the other hand, is under the CPI(M) government.

 

  • The Naga People’s Front is at the helm of the 60-member Nagaland Assembly.

 

  • The term of the Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura legislative assemblies is ending on March 6, March 13 and March 14 respectively.

 

  • The strength of the three assemblies is 60 members each.

 

  • Earlier in December, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Meghalaya and Mizoram. His visit has been termed by many, as the launch of the BJP’s campaign for assembly elections in the poll-bound north-east states.

 

  • Assembly elections in five states are scheduled to take place this year — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram.
