Aiyaary Review: Aptly titled, this film is nothing but deceit for Neeraj Pandey fans

Date:

Glossary: Aiyaary means Trickery Or Deception
Banal means cliched Or Boring
Riling means irritating and something that tests patience.

This Neeraj Pandey thriller called Aiyaary would better be described as a mumbo-jumbo of corruption expose ’s, blackmail, covert operations, officers gone rogue, double cross and triple cross and quadruple cross ( if there were such term that existed ). As an icing on this cake is a non-linear narration that ensures to keep up the suspense (read patience).

The movie begins on a promising note with army looking for two of its missing officers. And then we are given a peep into all that corruption and blackmail saga and get to know that both the officers were a part of some covert operation. And then in a series of back and forth flashbacks, we are introduced to umpteen characters and quite a few subplots that include a very insipid love story. And then comes twists and turns and lots of to and fro blackmails and double crosses. Very honestly, it’s beyond me to describe what goes on next.

By now you should start guessing as to why I am using so many “and then”. Well, that’s how the story progresses.

The treatment of the story is very repetitive. “ oh -so -seen -before “ kind of chases and virtually same background score as in his earlier thrillers are just a few of the things that were wrong. Thrills and suspense are virtually missing. The romance was flat and seemed to hinder the pace (the pace which was non-existent anyway). Some subplots are so unnecessary and irritating that they test your patience. And lesser said about the editing, the better. The nation wants to know why was an editor hired. So much so, that a scene of an accomplished actor like Naseer makes you feel like running out of the theatre.

Neeraj Pandey uses a fine set of actors who I must say tried pretty well to do their best in whatever they were given to do.

Manoj Bajpayee and Siddharth Malhotra get the meatiest of the roles. And apart from them, there’s a virtual parade of immensely capable actors who were hired to do nothing. For example, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Adil Hussain. I wonder if they even read the script or simply signed out of respect for Neeraj Pandey.

ALSO RAED: PadMan Review: This emotionally engaging & inspiring story brings a sensitive subject out of the closet

Can’t blame them. We were tricked by the same name. And we cannot be blamed either considering his filmography (A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby).

I think Aiyaary is aptly titled. For the audience who had their expectations calibrated as per Neeraj Pandey ‘s filmography, this movie is nothing but deceit. Sometimes earlier, he has faltered whenever he’s written just the screenplay and not directed ( like in Naam Shabana and Total Siyaapa ) but has always delivered when it came to direction and screenplay combined.

Unfortunately for us, this time he failed miserably in both departments.

For the sum up of my review on the movie, please refer to the glossary in the beginning.
( It was at the beginning for a reason .. for those who do not want to waste their time reading why they shouldn’t be watching this one )

Neeraj Pandey.. you have left us terribly disappointed and heartbroken.

Score 5 on 10
