Discover the culturally rich ‘true India’; top 5 tribal regions to tour this holiday season

Date:

India, along with Africa, has the largest tribal population in the world. Almost 10% of India’s population consists of tribal. These communities are largely cut off from mainstream modern life and are contained in their beautiful and nature-full surroundings. In the fast-evolving nuclear world, they are still trying hard to preserve their rituals and culture.
Here are the best tribal belts in India which can be toured to get a flavour of their pristine lifestyle. The true essence of a life that we have, unfortunately, forgotten in our run for modernisation.

Odisha
With around 60 different tribes, 25% of Odisha’s population consists of these belts. Odisha has deep forests and interiors. To visit these areas, one would require the services of a skilled tour operator. Most areas are quite inaccessible and require permits, with language also posing a barrier. Tours run for at least 5 nights, due to the amount of travel involved.

Chhattisgarh
Bordering Odisha, the small state of Chhattisgarh, used to earlier be a part of Madhya Pradesh. Over a third of its population is tribal, with most of them living in the thickly forested area of Bastar. The ‘Gond’ tribe is particularly popular for the beautiful Bastar art and for following unorthodox marriage practices. Young men and women live together in groups and interact freely before marriage.

Nagaland and Northeast India
There are 16 major tribes in Nagaland. Kohima, the capital, can be the base from where remote villages can be accessed. The village of Mokokchung, forexample, is fascinating with its unique tribal village life. Many people prefer organized tours, but it’s not a must if you’re adventurous. The Hornbill Festival, held every December in the Kohima district, offers a popular tribal experience.

Rajasthan
Around 15% of Rajasthan’s population is tribal. The Bhil tribe, the predominant group, were among the original inhabitants of Rajasthan. Don’t miss the five-day Baneshwar tribal fair, held every January/February in Dungarpur. You can also celebrate the Holi festival in traditional style in Banswara with the Bhils.
Conveniently located not far from Jodhpur, the Bishnoi village provides an authentic experience of rural Rajasthan. The notable Bishnoi tribe reveres nature and live in harmony with it, so much so that they bury their dead to preserve trees as wood is used in cremation.

Maharashtra
Most tribes of Maharashtra live in the hilly areas. Warlis, one of the popular tribes are known for their distinct artwork.

So, next vacation….think of exploring the hidden treasures of Indian culture and ancient communal legacies through these tribal communities.
