2 Years After The Cop Went Missing, Delhi Police Constable Arrested for Colleague’s Murder

Date:

Delhi: A Delhi Police head constable, identified as Surendra Rana (42), was arrested on October 1, 2023, for the murder of his former colleague, Mona Yadav, two years after he allegedly choked her to death. He then buried her body in a marshy swamp in Alipur, outer Delhi. Astonishingly, Rana managed to keep Yadav’s family in the dark about her demise by using her voice messages to convince them that she was alive, weaving an intricate web of deceit.

According to the report, the breakthrough in the case came when Rana led the police to the burial site last week, where they discovered skeletal remains believed to be Yadav’s. Ravindra Yadav, the Special Commissioner of Delhi Police’s crime branch said, “We have recovered the remains of the victim’s body and sent them for DNA checks. Rana did everything he could to trick the family and us. But we will be able to build a watertight case against him.”

Yadav’s family had previously alleged that their complaints were ignored by officers at Mukherjee Nagar police station in northwest Delhi. A case was only registered in April, 18 months after Yadav was first reported missing, following the intervention of Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora.

According to investigators, Yadav and Rana’s acquaintance began in 2018 when they both served as constables in the Delhi Police PCR unit. Over the years, they developed a friendship, with Rana assuming a fatherly role, referring to Yadav as ‘beta’ or child.

Yadav, originally from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, left the Delhi Police in 2020 to join her home state’s police force as a sub-inspector. However, in early 2021, she moved into a paying guest accommodation in Mukherjee Nagar, where she began preparing for the Indian Administrative Services exams. During this time, Rana, a married man, began stalking her, despite her repeated refusals and threats to expose him to colleagues and family.

On September 8, 2021, Rana persuaded Yadav to meet him “one last time” and lured her into an autorickshaw from Mukherjee Nagar to Alipur. There, he strangled her and concealed the body in a swamp, using stones to weigh it down, as revealed during police interrogations.

The constable created a plan to cover up his crime. He convinced Mona’s family that she was alive but didn’t want her family to contact her. His brother-in-law, Rabin, posed as “Arvind” and said he and Mona were married but in hiding because his family was opposed to their marriage.

“We found it suspicious that Mona refrained from communicating with us. She was a well-educated woman, and we had never impeded her in any way”, Mona’s elder sister told media.

“I travelled across five states to look for my sister. Every time her ATM card was used, I would go to that state. When I saw CCTV footage from the ATM kiosks, I would see a man wearing a helmet. Surendra would share information about hotels or dhabas and I would rush to them, hoping to find Mona,” said her sister, who works as a school teacher.

To trap Mona’s family in his web of lies, Surendra plotted to get a woman vaccinated for COVID-19 and procured a vaccination certificate under Mona’s name. Mona’s sister revealed that their suspicions about Surendra kept increasing, but they were unable to find any concrete evidence against him.

Mona’s sister registered a missing complaint eight months ago, but no progress was made in the case until she sister met with Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora two months ago. After sharing her heart-wrenching account, the case was transferred to the crime branch, which cracked it within two months.

Mona’s sister demanded a severe punishment for the accused. She also has appealed to senior police officers to locate Mona’s remains, so that the family can perform her final rites.
