One Nation, One Election: Former President Kovind Chairs First Committee Meeting

New Delhi: The inaugural meeting of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, convened this Saturday. Among those present in the meeting were Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and other committee members.

Earlier, the Central Government established an eight-member High-Level Committee tasked with examining the issue of ‘one nation, one election’ and providing recommendations for conducting simultaneous elections across the nation.

The committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind includes Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, former Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh,former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash C Kashyap, Senior Advocate Harish Salve, and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari.

Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury turned down the invitation to join the High-Level Committee (HLC) formed by the Central Government to assess the ‘one nation, one election’ issue.

The Congress leader, while turning down the invitation, expressed concern that the committee’s terms of reference had been prepared to ensure a specific outcome.
