Social activist Monica Lewinsky joins Twitter

Date:

Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern whose relationship with then-president Bill Clinton led to his impeachment, on Monday joined Twitter, quickly earning thousands of followers.

“#HereWeGo,” said the 41-year-old Lewinsky — whose Twitter profile brands her as a “social activist” and contributor to Vanity Fair magazine.

Her second tweet said she was “excited (and nervous) to speak to #Under30Summit” — an event taking place in Philadelphia on Monday and hosted by Forbes.

Also featured on the event’s agenda is Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai.

Lewinsky’s account has been verified by the microblogging service. She quickly earned more than 8,000 followers.

Earlier this year, Lewinsky broke her silence about her affair with Clinton, in a piece for Vanity Fair.

“It’s time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress,” Lewinsky wrote.

“I am determined to have a different ending to my story. I’ve decided, finally, to stick my head above the parapet so that I can take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past.”

Lewinsky says she now wants to help victims of cyber-bullying and harassment.

After news of the affair broke in 1998, Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives that December but was acquitted by the Senate.

His wife Hillary, a former secretary of state and possible presidential candidate in 2016, says she has “moved on” from the scandal.
