EC serves notice to AAP

Date:

New Delhi: The Election Commission in Delhi on Thursday issued a notice to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) following clashes outside the BJP headquarters. Meanwhile, AAP leaders Ashutosh and Shazia Ilmi are taken into custody for questioning. The Delhi Police registered a case of rioting and destruction of public property against the two and arrested 14 party men. “All those identifiable and present at the protest site have been named in the FIR,” said a senior police official.

Clashes broke out between AAP and BJP workers when the former protested in front of the BJP headquarters in Delhi and the later tried to chase them, following the temporary detention of Arvind Kejriwal in Gujarat on Wednesday.

Soon clashes spread to UP and Gujarat. In Kutch Kejriwal’s car was attacked. Armed with brooms, AAP workers clashed with the lathi-wielding activists of BJP in Lucknow. AAP activists allegedly attacked the BJP office with bricks, drawing retaliation. Reports of clashes came from Jhansi, Kanpur and Allahabad.

Reacting to the clashes, Kejriwal said, “I am sorry for the mistakes committed by the AAP workers. They should not have resorted to violence on my detention.”
