Italys McLean signs for Sale

Date:

Italy international full-back Luke McLean is to join Sale from Treviso, the English Premiership side announced Friday.

The Australian-born 26-year-old has won 57 caps for the Azzurri since making his debut for his adopted country in 2008.

Born in Townsville, Queensland, McLean went on to play for Perth Spirit before joining Italian side Calvisano in 2007 having turned down an offer to sign for the Perth-based Super franchise Western Force.

McLean represented Australia at Under-19 level but also qualified for Italy due to his Italian grandmother.

Having featured for Italy during the recent Six Nations, he is the latest player to be signed by north-west English side Sale, currently sixth in the 12-strong Premiership.

At Sale, he will join fellow new recruits Alberto de Marchi, his Italy team-mate, and the Scotland duo of Nathan Hines and Chris Cusiter.

“Luke is an exceptional international full-back,” Sale rugby director Steve Diamond told the club’s website.

“He is a genuine 15 and great under the high ball.

“Luke will bring a lot of experience with him and will complement and help push our standards.

“With qualifying for the new European competition, we have now brought in four internationals to replace the lads who are leaving.

“Luke is also a very competent goalkicker.”
