New Delhi: After a 10-day-long battle, Delhi University finally scrapped the controversial Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). An announcement to this effect was made by Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh on Friday.
Admission to the three-year degree course will begin next week. Admission seekers heaved a sigh of relief as VC made the announcement. There was jubilation on the campus as students and faculty members started celebrating the moment.
Late Wednesday, UGC Chairman asked DU to scrap FYUP and begin admissions for the three-year degree course. However, the Vice-Chancellor was adamant and did not respond. UGC then issued an ultimatum for DU for starting the three-year course. DU came out with a face-saving formula for starting the three-year course but retaining the course content of FYUP. The faculty and students opposed it.
In the mean time, 57 colleges showed their preference to three-year course. The students and faculty went on protest, some especially the B.Tech students, wanted FYUP retained. Some even went on fast. A group of students unsuccessfully tried to meet the President. Protestors held demonstrations in front of VC’s office as well as UGC chairman’s office.
On Friday, the Principals of 78 colleges met and decided to follow the three-year course. The VC finally relented, and announced that admissions to the three-year course would begin soon, ending the impasse.
