Train-bus collision in Telangana claims 12 lives

Date:

Hyderabad: At least 12 persons, including 11children were killed and 16 others seriously injured after a train rammed into a school bus at an unmanned railway crossing at Chegunta in Telangana’s Medak district on Thursday morning.

“11 students and the bus driver were killed while 16 children were grievously injured in the accident at the unmanned railway crossing,” said DIG N Suryanaarayana. Police believed that the driver tried to cross the track despite warnings of a train arriving.

The bus was carrying 40 children of the Kakatiya School in the district around 100 km from Hyderabad. It collided with the train at a crossing in Masaipet village. The accident sparked anger among local people, who say, they have been asking for gates to secure the railway crossing.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao ordered an inquiry and is believed to be on his way to the site.
