Centre transfers Maharashtra Governor to Mizoram

Date:

New Delhi: The BJP-led NDA government transferred yet another Governor appointed by the previous UPA regime. Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan was on Sunday transferred to Mizoram.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli was given the additional charge of Maharashtra.

A press communique said Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli “will discharge the functions of the governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangement for the office of the Governor of Maharashtra is made”.

The Governor’s seat in Mizoram fell vacant after Kamala Beniwal was sacked August 7 on charges of misusing the governor’s office.

Earlier, Vakkom Purushothaman who held the office of Mizoram Governor was transferred to neighbouring Nagaland, much to his annoyance.

Sankaranarayanan, had earlier in June protested to the reports of Governors being asked to quit office, saying that such rumours were insulting to the Constitutional post.

“No one has a permanent post in Democracy. The rumours around governor’s post are an insult to the constitutional post. I will take appropriate steps if asked by the appropriate authorities,” he had said then.

Sankaranarayanan was appointed the governor of Maharashtra for the second time in 2012, and his current term in office ends in 2017.

Prior to this, he served as the governor of Jharkhand and Nagaland for a total period of three years.

After Beniwal was sacked, former union home secretary Vinod Kumar Duggal had been given the charge of Mizoram.
