Youngistaan celebrates Diwali

Date:

New Delhi: Youngsters of the country have plans to celebrate Diwali differently this year.  From different ways to continue traditions to introducing new ones, young India is doing things its own way.

Many people are choosing to go eco friendly this year.  The movement against bursting crackers has been gaining momentum for a few years now. A popular social media campaign titled ‘No More Shor’, aims to convince people to say no to crackers. In Bhopal, group members of ‘Jazba-a spirit’ aimed to inspire city folks to celebrate Diwali in an eco-friendly manner with a series of street plays and a plantation drive, on October 17 and 18 at Iqbal Maidan and New Market respectively.

“Since Diwali is the festival of lights, we thought it was the perfect time to raise awareness about using lighting options to conserve electricity around our residential area. We gifted solar lights to the RWA and they will install those lights in the community park”, says Anjali Sharma, a young professional residing in Gurgaon.

Many others have enjoyed cashing in on the Diwali discounts that various ecommerce firms have been offering. “I just shifted to Bangalore for my studies, and have rented a flat along with my friends. We managed to furnish the entire house for half the cost we would have incurred otherwise. It certainly has been a happy Diwali for us.”

Party hopping is also growing in popularity, with youngsters attending as many as 3 parties in the same night. The tradition of gambling is also being carried forward, with enthusiasts using huge amounts of money to bet on. Games like Poker have replaced the usual Teen Patti, although many regular Poker players have switched to Teen Patti just for Diwali.

People are also beginning to watch what they eat, with dark chocolate replacing traditional mithais. “I’ve gifted a hamper of organic foodstuffs and recipes to all my friends this year. Maybe that will force them to think about their health.” , says Anushree Joshi, a yoga instructor in Pune.
