Vaiko walks out of BJP-led alliance

Date:

New Delhi: After MDMK Chief Vaiko walked out of the NDA alliance, the BJP’s alliance in Tamil Nadu seems to be on shaky ground.

V Gopalaswamy or Vaiko exited the NDA alliance after he lashed out at two BJP leaders for publicly criticizing the Narendra Modi led government at the Centre.

“Being in NDA is untenable because of PM Modi’s policies,” Mr Vaiko said.

While BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that the MDMK should be thrown out of the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu, his party colleague H Raja had allegedly threatened Mr Vaiko for criticizing the PM over several issues.

Vaiko, 70, had questioned the PM’s silence over the matter.

“I don’t think Swamy and Raja are the only representatives of the party. But I’m pained that even Amit Shah and Modi, he’s a big leader and I’m a small person, did not even condemn this,” Mr Vaiko said.

BJP National Secretary H Raja had allegedly warned Mr Vaiko to stop criticizing PM Modi or “BJP workers know how to control him.”

Another ally, Ramadoss, Monday hit out at Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj’s statement that the Bhagwat Gita should be declared the national book.

In sharp words, he said PM Modi had done “nothing praiseworthy” in six months in office, except “language and cultural imposition.”

Ramadoss said, “It is improper to thrust the Gita on everyone in a secular country. This move will only give credence to arguments that the Modi government wants to turn India into a Hindu country.”
