Actress Yogita dragged from car slapped by businessman

Date:

Actress Yogita Dandekar became yet another victim of road rage in the city, when she was dragged out of her car and slapped several times by a businessman.

Juhu resident Dandekar, who has acted in movies such as Madhur Bhandarkar’s Traffic Signal and the recently released Zara Sambhal Ke, a film on AIDS awareness, said in her complaint that she was thrashed by the accused, businessman Hansraj Surana and his driver Krishna Kumar Vaidyanath, for more than 10 minutes, even as nobody from the crowd came to her help. Surana is a director in a multi-national firm, She, however, prevented the accused from escaping, and a police patrol party finally took the three to Santacruz Police Station where Surana and Vaidyanath were arrested.

A Santacruz police officer confirmed that Surana and his driver were charged under the Indian Penal Code sections and were remanded in police custody till Thursday, when they managed to get bail.

While Surana remained unavailable for comment, Dandekar, who was in the news for posing naked in 2011 in support of Anna Hazare’s anti-graft movement, said that she has been a victim of an “unprovoked attack”. “I was on my way home from Siddhivinayak temple when Hansraj’s driver got out of his car and started screaming at me. I was at the wheel and I know for sure that my car didn’t ram into their vehicle, as the driver had been alleging,” she said.

The slanging match soon turned violent when Surana allegedly slapped Dandekar while she was still in the driver’s seat.

“He kept on hitting me for almost 10 minutes. Then he forced open the door of my car and dragged me out. He pushed me towards the railings, resulting in injuries to my back,” she said.

Despite suffering a swollen face and bruised back, Dandekar fought back and managed to get inside Surana’s car. “I held him by his shirt collar and managed to drag him out of the vehicle. A large crowd had gathered by then but nobody bothered to help me. Fortunately, a police van stopped by and took us to the police station,” she said. Dandekar said that she came to know of her assaulters’ identities at the police station, and such was the condition of her face that the cops immediately booked the two for assault.

“I have never been at the receiving end of such brutality and the incident has left me completely shocked. What’s more appalling is the incident took place in a busy lane (right outside late actor Feroz Khan’s bungalow) and more than 100 people had gathered there, but not one came to my help,” she said.

Alleging that she no longer feels safe in the city, Dandekar said that Mumbai had “lost its human touch”. A woman was being dragged in the street in front of them, but they watched on. Mumbai has turned into a city of shame,” a furious Dandekar said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Satyanarayan Chaudhary  said the matter was being probed. “The accused had been arrested,” he said.
