Parties plan elaborate arrangements for booth management

Date:

New Delhi: As Delhi prepares to vote on Saturday, political parties are making elaborate arrangements to manage the landmark election. While the Aam Aadmi Party claims to have deployed spy cameras to catch any attempt to bribe voters, the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) is drawing up an extensive booth management plan.

AAP, which recently alleged EVMs tampering, a charge rejected by the Election Commission, has provided more than 6,000 recording devices and 2,000 spy cameras to party volunteers to help them curb the practise of liquor and money distribution during the Assembly polls.

“More than 6,000 recording devices have been distributed and more than 2,000 spy cameras have been given to volunteers. This is an attempt to curb the practise of liquor/money distribution during elections,” AAP spokesperson Atishi Marlena, said.

The BJP on the other hand, is leaving nothing to chance. In an elaborate booth management plan, the party is fielding one worker per 50 voters.

As many as 254 FIRs under the Arms Act and the Excise Act have been registered so far and 259 persons arrested. The Delhi CEO also said Rs 32,20,000 have been seized till date and 252 cases of Model Code violations have been reported while 173 FIRs have been registered against different political parties so far.

The aggressive campaigning by political parties for the February 7 Delhi Assembly polls ended on Thursday with leaders holding roadshows and public meetings in a final attempt to woo the voters.

The Assembly polls on Saturday is seen as a direct fight between the BJP and AAP after the Congress, which ruled Delhi for uninterrupted 15 years, recorded its worst performance bagging only eight seats in the December 2013 elections.

Over 1.33 crore electorate will decide the fate of 673 candidates in the fray for the Delhi. According to the Election Commission, polling will take place at 12,177 polling stations, of which 714 have been identified as “critical”.

For the first time, indelible ink will be applied with brush instead of wooden stick. “As many as 95,000 government officials have been roped in for election duty to ensure smooth conduct of the polling process. Besides, adequate numbers of security personnel will be deployed at all polling booths,” Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Chandra Bhushan Kumar said.
