Robredo tumbles out in Rio

Date:

Spanish third seed Tommy Robredo tumbled out of the Rio Open on Wednesday, losing his second-round meeting with Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer in straight sets.

Robredo won just five games as his rival scored a 6-3, 6-2 win in 68min aided by early breaks in both sets to advance to a last eight meeting with either home hope Joao Souza or Slovenian Blaz Rola.

Argentinian Juan Monaco overcame a second set fightback after skating through the first to see off Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-1, 7-6 (7/4).

Spanish second seed David Ferrer, out to deny Rafael Nadal a successful title defence, was later facing Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker.

Women’s WTA second round action brought little cheer for the American contingent as both Grace Min and Bethanie Mattek-Sands bowed out.

Min went down 6-3, 6-1 to Israel’s Julia Glushko while

Romanian second seed Irina Begu dispatched Mattek-Sands 6-2, 6-4.

The Rio Open event at the swish Jockey Club is Latin America’s largest tournament with $1.5 million prizemoney.
