Shailesh Yadav dies; unsettles PEB scam probe

Lucknow: Madhya Pradesh Governor Ramnaresh Yadav’s son Shailesh Yadav, an accused in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) scam, died at his home in Lucknow on Wednesday morning.

According to reports, Shailesh, 50, died of brain haemorrhage at his residence at Mall Avenue.

Ramnaresh Yadav, 86, who was admitted to the ICU of a hospital in Bhopal five days ago, went into shock on getting the news of his son’s death. 

Officials at Gautampalli police station confirmed that Shailesh’s family had informed police about the development but had not given any reason for the death.

Shailesh was named as an accused in an FIR filed in connection with the multi-layered scam in admission and recruitment tests conducted by the MPPEB for recommending people for appointment as contractual teachers in 2013.

He was recently booked in the PEB scam for allegedly accepting money from five people for recruitment as forest guards, the Union government reportedly asked Ramnaresh Yadav to step down. However, the governor has given no indication that he intends to quit.

According to STF sources, Shailesh was accused of helping 10 candidates clear the written exams in the contract teachers’ recruitment eligibility test.

One of the accused in the case, Veerpal Singh Yadav had told interrogators that he had handed over a list of 10 candidates and Rs 3 lakh for each of them to Shailesh Yadav through one Vijay Pal Yadav, said to be a close aide of the governor’s son.

More than 1,800 people have been arrested in connection with the MPPEB scam.
