Samsung, which is continuing to reel under the pressure of its own balance sheet and competition from others, is said to be launching its upcoming smartphone in the ‘Note’ series, the new Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ . Both phones will be unveiled on August 12 and then go on sale August 21.
On July 6, the company revealed that it expects its seventh straight quarterly decline in profits at a time when it’s been losing sales and customers to Apple, on the high end, and to Chinese vendors such as Xiaomi, on the low end.
Launching two new big-screened phones, also known as phablets, could be one way to try to recapture lost market share. People have been gravitating more toward phablets, meaning smartphones with screen sizes larger than 5 inches and usually hovering around 5.5 inches.
Recently, there were reports that the company may pre-pone the launch of Note 5 in order to avoid a clash with Apple’s iPhone launch.
Although the two companies vigorously compete in the high-end markets, they have resisted the urge to release flagship units at the same time. Generally, Apple releases its models in late September to prepare for the US holiday sales season.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is rumored to feature a 5.7-inch to 5.89-inch display, Exynos 7422 chipset and a 4,100mAh battery. It is said that the phone will measure just 7.9mm in thickness. It will be the first smartphone from Samsung to have 4GB RAM.
Meanwhile, a report from Sammobile suggests that along with Note 5, the much rumoured iPhone 6 Plus-like nomenclated smartphone of the company — Galaxy S6 Edge+ will also be taking stage.
S6 Edge+ is rumoured to have curved display on both sides and will be powered by a Exynos 7420 chipset instead of Snapdragon 808 with 3GB RAM.
Samsung has previously unveiled new Galaxy Note models at the IFA electronics show in Germany, but this year it has opted to unveil the newest products a month earlier and start selling them in September, the start of the fourth quarter.
