JJ Henry drained an eagle on the second sudden-death hole to beat fellow American Kyle Reifers in a playoff and capture the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship.
The 40-year-old Henry on Sunday won his second title in the event after winning in 2012 and punched his ticket to next week’s PGA Championship. It was also his third career USPGA Tour crown.
“I was just trying to put a good stroke on it. It has been a great week. I am real proud of the way I hung in there,” Henry said.
Henry birdied the 18th hole in regulation to score six points in the final round and tie Reifers with a four day total of 47 and set up the sudden-death showdown.
It was the fourth playoff in Barracuda Championship history and the first in over a decade in the unique tournament which features a Modified Stableford scoring system assigning point values to shots rather than registering a score relative to par.
Reifers sank a long birdie putt and Henry tapped in for birdie on the first playoff hole to send them back to the 18th tee at the Montreux Golf and Country Club course.
Henry then drained his eagle putt on the second playoff hole from just off the green after Reifers hit a superb approach shot to give him a good look at an eagle. But Reifers two putted giving Henry the victory.
