Lion population increases four-fold in Gir!

Lions are disappearing on a large scale. That’s true for most parts of the globe, but not for Gir sanctuary. Good news, isn’t it?

The population of lions has improved drastically by 4 folds in the lion region of Gujarat, Gir. Excluding one poaching incident in 2007 and five deaths due to electrocution and 13 lions which flushed away in the floods, rest are safe in the areas of Gir.

Around 40% of total lion population stay in Amreli and Bhavnagar district alone. 211 out of 523 lions live there. According to forest officials, the area enclosed by lions has enlarged from 5000 sqkm in 2005, to 10,000 sqkm in 2010, to 22,000 sqkm in 2015.

According to 2015 survey, there are 109 male, 201 female and 213 sub-adult (lion cubs below the age of three years) lions in the forest areas of these districts.
