‘Amma salt’ set to be launched nationwide

Chennai: Claiming overwhelming response in Tamil Nadu to the launch of low cost ‘Amma salt’, the Jayalalithaa government on Saturday said it soon planned to expand sales pan India.

“Sale of Amma salt will be launched in New Delhi,Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh soon by the Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation”, the policy note tabled in the assembly said.

As of August 2015 around 6,760 metric tonnes of Amma salt were sold in the state, an ‘overwhelming response’ in the state, it said.

Chief minister Jayalalithaa, addressed as “Amma” (mother) by her supporters, had launched Amma double fortified salt, low sodium salt and refined free flow iodized salt on June 11 last year, priced at Rs 25, Rs 21 and Rs 14.

The AIADMK government has been launching various initiatives under the “Amma” brand, including Amma Unavagam (Hotels), Amma Water (drinking water) and Amma Cement.

The policy note also said that the state government planned to distribute Amma salt in 5kg and 25kg packs to hotels, hospitals and hostels in the state.
