Cafe Madras in Matunga in Mumbai completed 75 glorious years on Tuesday. To mark the occassion, the owners decided to serve mouthwatering food in one of the most unusual ways: the customer will be charged at rates that existed at the restaurant back in 1940 when it began its operations.

Jayprakash Menon, grandson of the owner, claimed that the offer soon turned into a surprise, as customers who paid a mere Rs 1 for their breakfast, soon took to social networking – making the entire event viral and the most talked about.
“It was supposed to be a surprise for our patrons, but soon via Facebook and Twitter, people started sharing the prices, photos of the bills and within an hour we had long queues outside the cafe,” Menon told an English daily.
Cafe Madras today served steam idli with sambar and chutney at 20 paise, Upama 20 paise, Masala Dosa 40 paise and Filter coffee at 15 paise. While people had to wait for almost 45 minutes to an hour to get a seat in the restaurant, they didn’t mind the time against the food served almost free.
