Delhi Cabinet nods for salary hike of MLAs

Date:

New Delhi: In good news for Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led government on Friday showed the green signal for hike in salary and allowances of Delhi MLAs.

The cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence approved the proposal.

“Cabinet has approved a hike in salary and allowances of MLAs. The government will now send the approved proposal to the Lt Governor for his nod,” sources said.

They, however, did not specify the quantum of hike in allowances and salary of 70 MLAs Delhi has.

In July, a group of AAP legislators had demanded a significant hike in salary, arguing that their earnings were not enough to run their family and offices.

In October, a three-member committee headed by former Secretary General of Lok Sabha PDT Achary had recommended two-and-half-fold hike in salary from current Rs 88,000 per month to Rs 2.10 lakh.

The committee, which had submitted its report to Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, had favoured a 400 per cent hike in basic salary of MLAs from Rs 12,000 to Rs 50,000 per month.
