Tsunami from the sky

Date:

On a city used to the scorching sun came a monsoon mayhem
That rained daggers of water drops that rattled them

Harking back to the deadly waters from a decade ago
Rained a spell like there was no tomorrow

This tsunami came from the sky, not a quake
Leaving unprecedented devastation in its wake

Roads turned into rivers and homes became cellars
Dwellers were marooned with water till collars

Chennai, a city so great
seemed doomed to a grim fate

Yet,

The torrential rain could not wet Chennai’s spirit
Moistened were the eyes that witnessed nature’s gory script

From the brink of a watery grave, rose a valiant city
Powered by unity, brotherhood and humanity

Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter were abuzz, not with memes
But with offers of relief and aid from helpful teams

Realizing Dr. Kalam’s dream in the need of the hour
Surged the city’s wave of youth power

The prism of differences was shattered by the hammer of unity
As the rainbow of religions combined to form a light of equality

Large ATMs became bankrupt but the smallest purse strings loosened
The warm and benevolent soul of Chennai had awakened

The mightiest gates opened to shelter the people in distress
Warming the cockles of our hearts, many would confess

Intolerance, Disharmony, Despondency – we hear some scream
Chennai doesn’t know what these alien words mean !

To the world’s anxious and concerned eyes
We say : Fear not ! for we will rise

Stronger than ever, Indomitable as ever and Closer than ever.
We are not just a city, Chennai is a FAMILY forever.
