ULFA leader Anup Chetia released from jail

Date:

ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia was released from the Guwahati Central Jail, on Thursday, hours after he was granted bail in the last of the four cases registered against him.

United Liberation Front for Asom (ULFA) leader Anup Chetia, who was recently repatriated from Bangladesh on the basis of a bilateral extradition arrangement, was today released from Guwahati Central Jail.

The Guwahati Sessions court had yesterday granted him bail.

Chetia had reportedly sought forgiveness for the past mistakes of the Assam-based militant outfit, and added that he is all in favour of having peace talks with the Indian Government.

The ULFA general secretary was earlier sent to five days custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Earlier, on November 17, Chetia was brought to Guwahati by the CBI on a transit remand and produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate amid tight security.

Chetia was charged with illegally entering Bangladesh using a forged passport, possession of illegal foreign currency from 16 different countries and illegal possession of arms. He was also wanted by the Assam Police for various cases, including killing, kidnapping and extortion.

Chetia, who has been in Bangladesh since his arrest by the country’s police in 1997, was handed over to India on November 11 following which he was arrested by the CBI in Delhi.
