The tremor struck about 35 kilometers (22 miles) below the surface.
Some slight shaking was felt in Ecuador’s capital of Quito, which 153 kilometres (94 miles) to the southeast.
Expect aftershocks hours, days, or weeks after the main quake. Aftershocks can cause building damage and falling debris that could injure. Authorities say there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
