Bengal School’s eminent painter passes away

Kolkata, Aug 24 (PTI) Eminent painter DhirendranathBrahma, best known for his Bengal School of Art works, passedaway today following age-related illness. He was admitted to the government-run SSKM hospital forthe last few days and died during the day, the family said. Born in 1924 at Barisal in Bangladesh, Brahma had studiedin Kolkata where he also had the opportunity to work under thelikes of Nandalal Bose and Lakshmeshwar Singha atSantiniketan. His mural paintings now grace the walls of Parliament inNew Delhi. Brahma was also the head of the department of Indian styleof painting at the Government College of Art where he taughtNeo-Bengal tradition of painting. In 2014, the state government had felicitated him with alifetime achievement award. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed hercondolences to the family saying it was a great loss to theworld of painting. "I express my heartfelt condolences to his family. I prayfor the departed soul," she said in a message. PTI NIK DKBSMJ
