AIIMS doctor commits suicide, dowry angle suspected

New Delhi, Sept 16 (PTI) An AIIMS doctor allegedlycommitted suicide by injecting herself with some poisonoussubstance at her flat in IP Extension in east Delhi even asthe police today said they were probing dowry angle. 30-year-old Dr Ritu Bangoti, who worked at Anesthesiadepartment of AIIMS, took the extreme step at her flat inKurmanchal Apartment yesterday evening, they said. The victim’s family members, meanwhile, have accused herin-laws of harassing her for dowry. "The statement of the girl’s family has been recorded infront of the SDM and inquest proceedings are on. We have addedthe charges of 304(B)(dowry death)," said DCP (East) Rishi PalSingh. Ritu did not leave behind any suicide note but police isinvestigating the matter by questioning her family members andneighbours. The deceased’s husband, Brajesh, who is a pilot, wasquestioned for several hours, police said, adding thepostmortem report is awaited, police said. The deceased used to stay with her in-laws. When she didnot come out of her room for a long time, family members brokeopen the door and found her body, he said. The police was informed about the death of the doctor byher brother who had made a PCR call. Ritu was allegedly having strained relations with herhusband. Neighbours told the police that the couple hadfrequent fights over domestic issues. The girl’s family members alleged that her in-laws usedto demand dowry which constantly worried Ritu, said theofficer. The reason behind the death of the doctor and the natureof substance she allegedly injected herself with were underinvestigation, police said.
