Manipur Assembly Elections 2017 Phase 2 polling underway

Date:

Manipur : The northeast state of Manipur is ready to poll in the last round of two-phased polling on Wednesday in the Manipur Assembly Elections 2017.

While it is Irom Sharmila Chanu versus Okram Ibobi Singh in the final phase of polling in 22 assembly constituencies, the other big name contesting in phase two is Deputy Chief Minister M Gaikhangam.

Gaikhangam is fighting on Nungba assembly constituency against Adim Pamei of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The fate of IPS officer T. Radheshyam, who quit to contest the elections from Heirok on a BJP ticket will also be decided.

Irom Sharmila and CM Ibobi are contesting in the Thoubal assembly constituency. While the election has been billed as one of the most significant deciding factors for the state of Manipur, all eyes are now set on the ‘Iron Lady of Manipur’ who broke her 16-year fast in August 2016 and floated a party of her own called People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) in her quest to get the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) repealed.
