‘India faces worst long term water crisis in its history’: NITI Aayog

New Delhi: India is facing water crisis from a very long time and millions of lives are at risk. Demand is way higher than supply.

Till 2030 the situation will be must where demand will be twice of the supply. It will shave around six per cent of the total gross domestic product.

About 200,000 Indians die every year due to inadequate access to safe water and 600 million faces high to extreme water stress, the National Institute for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog said.

The critical groundwater resources are being used up at unsustainable rates, bringing out a warning sign. People have to move towards sustainable methods of water consumption.

India is suffering from the worst water crisis in its history.

For rain-dependent farmers, it is very difficult to survive. Droughts are being observed regularly.

To help state governments manage water resources, the think tank said it has developed a Composite Water Management Index with nine areas of assessment.

Limited institutions are in place for national water governance as inter-state disputes are increasing with seven disagreements currently going on.

Out of 1.3 billion, 163 million of the population lack access to clean water close to home, the most of any country, said a report.
