Read how a Chandigarh man redefined alimony

Date:

A case of alimony on Tuesday has been given another date of July 27 as the money could not be counted. The reason was that the money came in the form of coins of Re. 1 and Rs. 2 that made it hard for the money to be counted.

The entire scene was witnessed in the district courts when a lawyer of the Punjab and Haryana High Court gave a bag full of coins to his ex-wife. The act agitated the woman and she found it a way of torturing her and a way of making fun of her.

In 2015, the couple had filed a divorce and had been living separately. According to the court hearings, the man was asked to provide a sum of Rs. 25,000 monthly to his ex-wife as a custom and part of the maintenance. However, on failing to do, the case was further taken to the high court and he was directed to then given Rs. 50,000 for two months.

The reason given by him for this act was that according to him, he had no money, which the lady by no means could believe. The husband, however, justified the act by saying that in no rule or anywhere is it mentioned about any denominations that need to be given as alimony. He also appointed three of his juniors to assist in getting the amount counted.

The additional district and sessions judge Rajnisk K Sharma has now moved the date of the case in order to get the money counted.
