P V Sindhu, Indian shuttler, made her spot into the World Championships finals on Saturday after defeating the world no. 2 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-16, 24-22 in an incredible 55-minute match.
Ahead of the match, Sindhu had a 6-4 head-to-head record against Yamaguchi, who had defeated the Indian in big-ticket events such as All England Championship this year and Dubai Superseries Final last year.
The match started off with Yamaguchi leading 5-0 over Sindhu, but Sidhu soon bounced back taking away the lead from her Japanese opponent to win the first set 21-16.
While Sindhu was trailing 12-19 in the second set, she soon managed to level the game and clinched the set 24-22.
‘It was a good match overall. I hope this time it would be a better result than the last time. I have to prepare well for tomorrow, so it’s not yet over,’ Sindhu said after the match.
Sindhu will now meet Carolina Marin in the title contest on Sunday. Marin had robbed Sindhu off a gold medal at the Rio Olympics after defeating the Indian in the summit clash.
Marin earlier defeated He Bing Jiao 13-21, 21-16, 21-13 in the first semi-final. Overall, Marin has a 6-5 advantage over Sindhu, who had beaten the Spaniard in their last encounter at the Malaysia Open in June.
