Improvements for Elphinstone Road Station still on paper after one year of stampede

Date:

Last year, September 29 was marked as the day of a stampede at the Elphinstone Road Station in which 23 people lost their lives. Teams were formed by the railway authorities to inspect and examine the suburban network infrastructure as well as providing suggestions for its improvement. However, one year has passed, and no action has been taken yet based on the recommendations.

Among the recommendations, some of the immediate actions taken included the zone-wise formation of teams such as BMC, KDMC, TMC, NMMC, VVMC, GRP, and RPF. On the basis of the reports by the teams, additional manpower was needed, foot overbridges were to be constructed, and the entry-exit points needed to be cleared.

If we get into the reality of the measures, very little has been done over the past one year out of the actual suggestions that were taken. After the incident, two more such cases were witnessed in Delisle Bridge, Lower Parel and Santacruz Railway Station.

Mumbaikars are still waiting for some real actions to stop these accidents and keep the city safe to live in.
